Communication in Organizations and Why You Can’t Function Without It

If your organization was a car, the executive director would be the driver, governance would the steering wheel, your services and programs would be the gas, and your methods of communication would be the wheels. Yes, communication is that important, your organization cannot move without it! The programs may propel your organization, but if the success of those programs can’t be communicated, the car (your organization) isn’t going anywhere.

Communication can generally be divided into two parts: Internal and External.

With internal communication, it is generally how information is transferred within the organization. Successful leaders know that good communication increases transparency, fosters oneness and understanding of the vision and mission, offers a boost to morale, and more. This also ties into how organizational change and operational procedures are communicated, including performance appraisal, human resources, policy, etc. How core details are communicated internally determines the culture your organization has.

External communication is just that, communicating with people outside of your organization. Some may ask what kind of communications you need with individuals who aren’t directly involved in your business. However, you need to get your message out so that people know what you company is doing and why they should support it (call to action). Arguably, your stakeholders can be labeled as internal or external depending on the terms and depth of organizational involvement. Public relations (PR) and fundraising (also known as development) fall into the category of communications. PR methods (i.e. press releases, social media) can be used to promote your organization and get more people on board with your vision. Fundraising and development can be increased by having a strategy for your individual (in-kind) and upper-level donor communications. A communications plan is useful for all organizations. Check out our free template here.
