How to Keep Your Staff: Top Nonprofits Offer Organizational Stability and Transparency

People want to work for companies that are stable yet flexible, shocking right?

In the nonprofit and community organizing sector, that can be easier said than done. Leadership stability and organizational flexibility make nonprofits more successful in recruiting and retaining good employees and strong funders. A change, like getting a new CEO, can have a major impact on the organization’s culture and its funding potential. Equally, retaining a CEO that has no background in organizing programming or a negative reputation for managing funds is just as detrimental to the organization. There needs to be staff confidence and buy-in in the vision developed by leadership, whether they’ve been there 8 years or 8 months.

It is very important to manage the culture of the organization as much (if not more) than you manage the staff. Fostering a spirit of collaboration when it comes to making changes to programs or policies that impact your human capitol most will alleviate some of the negative responses via morale organizations typically get when making changes.

Key items identified by staff as important factors for staying with their community organization were:

  • I feel I am valued in this organization.

  • I have confidence in the leadership of this organization.

  • I like the type of work that I do.

  • Most days, I feel I have made progress at work.

  • I can trust what this organization tells me.

  • At this organization, employees have fun at work.

  • I feel part of a team working toward a shared goal.

  • My pay is fair for the work I perform.

  • This organization treats me like a person, not a number.

  • This organization provides as much ongoing training as I need.

If there are to be C-suite changes (executive leadership), consider creating a staff inclusive committee to contribute their views to best practices for updating the organizational culture, or bring on a consultant to work with your Human Resources department to bringing about changes through proven change management strategies that include staff and executive input.

The better the changes are planned and collaborative, the more likely that change implementation won’t cause a decrease in your organization’s productivity during the process. Let Social Solutions help you with organizational management today!
