What is Capacity Building?

Capacity building is a broad term that encompasses “actions that improve nonprofit effectiveness,” in terms of organizational and financial stability, program quality, and growth. Education of nonprofit management workers and a shift to “strategic philanthropy” increased the need for and capacity-building plans. A business with a strong organizational capacity and the ability to present those results can also increase charitable contributions.

While often overlooked, capacity building is the infrastructure that supports and shapes nonprofits and businesses into forces of efficacy. Capacity building enables the development of community organizations and their leaders’ competencies and skills to make them more effective and sustainable, which increases the potential to enrich lives and solve community problems.

There are many sources for capacity building assistance. Consulting is just one avenue, but it can give your organization many options. Social Solutions Consulting can provide evaluation, web-based education, in-person training, best practices, and more to offer your nonprofit and its board/staff opportunities to build the capacity of the organization. Contact us to get started building your capacity!
